New history
  After the Liberation, the Berlin Treaty split Bulgaria and Haskovo and its region fell within the boundaries of Eastern Rumelia. In the spring of 1879 the Russian government handed over the rule in the hands of the Bulgarian administration, which slowly and gradually put under control all complex problems of the transition to free and independent government. An unprecedented agrarian turnover was made. Agriculture, a basic sector in the regional economy, set out on a road of its own. The downfall of the crafts after the Liberation favoured the industrial development of the city. The first factories were built, new commercial relations and markets were established. The tobacco sector was leading in the size of capital investment, number of employees and annual output. The visage of the city changed by the day. New settlers came from the surrounding villages. The population grew, mostly its Bulgarian ethnic element. In 1900 Haskovo had 15,000 inhabitants in 3215 households.   The unjust clauses of the Berlin Treaty (1878) made the national issue in the Balkans very acute. The series of wars, the Balkan Wars and the First World War did not bypass Haskovo, which is always in the way of strong interests. Its valiant soldiers demonstrated great courage, and the citizens – great compassion. The city’s location attracted two waves of thousands of refugees from Macedonia and Thrace, which created serious social problems. They settled here and had to be given land, jobs and conditions to build their homes. This was a heavy burden on the administration, but slowly and surely all problems were resolved.
 The temporary and partial stabilization that set in in the country in the mid-1920s was favourable for the city’s development. Trade, agriculture and the industries enlivened. The area under tobacco, sunflower and cotton crops was extended. Daily hundreds of railway cars loaded with tobacco left Haskovo. The agricultural exports expanded. Agriculture was modernized. New plants of the food and tobacco industries were built. Economic stability was pursued mainly through labour intensification, by wide use of women’s and children’s labour, which was paid cheaper, and by prolonging the working hours. Despite the partial stabilization, in Haskovo there were thousands of unemployed because of the seasonal tobacco jobs.
The economic revival in the country, which began in 1935 and lasted till the end of 1937, helped solve one of he major problems of the city, the water supply. The gradual electrification of the city, started in the early 1920s, extended and improved the electricity supply by the year. Streets, roads, bridges, system of sewers and water supply were built and maintained, city garden, squares, landscaping, the river bed was corrected and rocked. A number of administrative and economic buildings were constructed, which with the new housing made the new cityscape. In those years were built the slaughterhouse, the market hall, the municipal house, the courts of justice, the theatre, dozens of tobacco storehouses, schools, hospital, etc.   The political and economic changes post September 9, 1944 and the end of the Second World War transformed the economy. With the nationalization of the enterprises their economic policy was organized by the state. A priority task was the recovery and development of the national economy, and creation of conditions for its industrialization and mechanization. Planned economy was introduced. In agriculture collectivization of the land was made and machinery-tractor stations set up. One of the largest processing-industry plants in Haskovo is the Tobacco Industry State Enterprise, which unites all the existing 50 tobacco storehouses in the Haskovo region.  The textile sector also experienced major pooling. A centre of silk production became Svila plant, and of the cotton industry – Zheko Dimitrov mill. In the 1960s and 70s, as a result of the intensive industrialization, large industrial plants were built in Haskovo such as the machine works Mlada Gvardia and Hristo Smirnenski, the Chemical Machine Building plant, Trakia cigarette factory, the tailoring services plant Mir, etc. Their products were sold on the Bulgarian market and exported to a number of countries.
 The city industrialization was related to its growth, town planning and development. New quarters and streets sprang up, green areas, schools, policlinics, bread-making plant, cultural institutions, shops.
As a result of the changes in 1989, many of the machine-building plants switched to new, modern technological production, others closed down. New enterprises and economic groups have been established, whose products are sold on the domestic and the international market. Today Haskovo is a modern town, with contemporary infrastructure and visage. Its cultural life is acquiring ever greater dimensions. Apart from the cultural institutions and schools in the city, the cultural holidays are also acquiring new substance. Drawing on its rich historical roots and beautiful Bulgarian traditions, today Haskovo is proudly set on its millennial road. Facing Europe, looking into the future with self-confidence and optimism.
