Tourism Information for Madjarovo
The town of Madjarovo is situated in a beautiful area in the middle of the Eastern Rhodopes along the Arda River. The first settlers of this land came here 6,000 years ago. Later the region fell into the boundaries of the Odrysae Kingdom and was settled by the Thracians, that later made it into a cult settlement to the sun and the rocks. The quadrilateral shaped rock recesses and the stone tombs are relics of this time. Near the village of Doini Glavanak, a Thracian sanctuary has been found dating from the 8th - 7th century BC. It is a megalithic monument similar to the legendary Stonehenge. The sanctuary is the only one of its type in Bulgaria, and is interesting due to its age. Two Thracian tombs with unique architecture, dating back to the 3rd century BC have also been found near Madjarovo. In the Kardjali museum, you can find a model of a tomb found in Madjarovo.
During the Middle Ages the defensive line of the boundary Byzantine region, Ahrida, passed through this territory. Strongholds were built on the hills, and the remnants of Okopa the largest and highest fortress, can still be seen. Within the fortress is a small church with wall paintings and marble ornaments, a cistern for water and rock recesses.

The protected areas near Madjarovo comprise the habitats of the last griffon vultures in Bulgaria. The protection of the colony of these griffon vultures is of great importance for preserving the species in Europe.
