Situated in the south-eastern part of the Rhodopes and the Republic of Bulgaria, Ivailovgrad municipality comprises the north-western part of Thracia. The beautiful landscape is vast with fertile fields and dense forests fed by the Ivailovgrad reservoir. Around this area are traces of the ancient Thracians and Romans, medieval Byzantine and Bulgaria, the Ottoman Empire and finally, of the Bulgarian renaissance period. There are approximately 50 cultural monuments in the municipality: 6 architectural, 18 archaeological and 26 churches. In the historical section of Ivailovgrad, traditional rich Rhodopian houses have been preserved from the middle of the 19th and beginning of the 20th centuries. The historical and the ethnographic museum of the town is located in such traditional house. The interior keeps the atmosphere and decoration from the middle of the 19th century.
